The Most Common thing I hear when I walk into the home of a new client: "I have never hired a decorator before. I don't know how this works."
Hey, I truly understand.
This is a way of saying: I am nervous about this. What can I expect? I get it, a strange person is walking into your sacred space who is going to fix everything! But these people have gotten over their biggest fear: Picking up the phone to call me and setup an appointment.

That elephant's name is Fear (also called the chatter in your head preventing you from moving forward to call and get the beautiful home you deserve). You know what’s going on- you think you are the only one with the head-talk-stuff happening. You are not. (And usually people tell me, I wish I would have done this years ago; all that indecision.)
Some "Answers" to the "Questions" to your head-chatter that will talk you out of having a well-designed home:
What if I don’t like her ideas? Then tell her, because there are millions of solutions for every decorating problem.
How do I know she and I will work together? Call her.
Will she judge me on how my house looks? HELLO!!! I am there to help you LOVE your home. And she has seen lot of clutter and dust bunnies (in fact, don’t hide things, that way she can give you fabulous solutions).
OK, it’s only fair, Here's My biggest fear? That you are enjoying your home so much, you forget to email me your "after" pictures!

(I see this often, and most times, the one resisting becomes one of my best fans!)
STOP:Don't call me until you know for sure your significan other is on-board. It will take the wind out of your sails after you get excited with what we can do! Nothing is worse that saying: "I need to check with my husband/wife/significant other."
Just so you know, many times after working with homeowners, the spouse (usually the husband) who was not there during a consultation asks their spouse to call me before starting to decorate their next room. Why? Because they know I am respectful of their budget and it helps them do it right, the first time. A painless decorating process that eliminates costly Interior Design mistakes. And when the spouse is happy, the whole family is happy.... with a happy life.
If you can't afford it, just be upfront and be honest. That's ok. I know money doesn't grow on trees, and everyone has a budget. Just like anything in life, set a goal to save the money over the next month or so. I did this several years ago with a single mother, and she was so happy about the results, that a few years later, she saved for a second room.
The warning of SPOUSAL Push back : (men reading this, please go to another page on this website- we don't want you to see this). So, many men don't understand about how important it is to you about being proud of your home. So if it has a grandpa recliner, many men don't care about what it looks like, as long as it is comfortable. I know, many men don't get it. Because they think the house is decorated just fine, they believe you should think like them. This is Venus and mars... from different planets. Here's a little ammunition to counter the "everything is" fine: Start dressing in something frumpy for a while....explain to him this is how you feel in your home: sad and unappealing. Or, also, "how much were those golf clubs?" "boys trip?" "new Boat? ... what was the new toy purchased? You get the picture.

One thing to consider with the FREE Interior Design Services from Retail Stores, I have corrected many of these FREE Decorating Services. That is because most are not trained in Interior Design; balance, symmetry, repetition, color theory, textures, how high to hang items, how to accessorize, etc. , or, they have not been trained in Feng Shui- Flow and balance of energy.
And, then there are the on-line services. Don't waste your money. Many of the online e-design push their products, which most of the time are not quality items. I have corrected many of these services also; people are sad they have spent the money and they end of with rooms that don't feel warm and cozy, and don't flow with the rest of the house- of course not, these people are not seeing anything but the measurements you take.
Then I know for sure one Designer charges $450 for a discovery meeting over coffee. They have discovered a lot of things, but for $1500, then you get a plan. Another company charges $785 for an hour of Discovery. Hmmmmm...... maybe I need to raise my rates?
My rates are less than $400, depending on the room size.
Why are my Flat Rate Decorating Services so Reasonable Priced? Because we work together- you and me. We make quick decisions together. I don't "source" materials- which means, I don't have to find trade prices and create a spread sheet for mark-up. This is time-consuming, and that is what you are charged for by other Designers.
I recommend that you sit on upholstered pieces of furniture before you buy. Nothing is worse than uncomfortable furniture. With my Consultations, everything is handed to you before I leave your house. Yes, all the Design work is completed in about 2 hours. You are fully equipped to Decorate a room. And, yes, you can give me a cup of coffee while I'm at your home (wink-wink-wink), if you please.
Know for sure, one Interior Designer is not better than another. It is a time versus money situation. And you may need a comprehensive Home Decorating Processwhere everything is purchased for you. I have worked in houses from 300 to 13,000 square feet. So, it is about your needs.
